Several weeks ago I saw an article on the Cision blog that I had to flag for later. In the past few weeks, it has come across my mind many times. As we get closer to Father’s Day, I decided to take a few minutes and write a blog post about some of the thoughts it has raised for me.
Thinking of my Dad
For me, Father’s Day has gone uncelebrated by me for quite some time though I certainly appreciate the efforts of many dads & enjoy recognizing them. My father died while I was in college, and thinking about that in the same breath as a list of top daddy bloggers is hard to process at best. See, my dad died before I even had my first email address. And the very idea of opening up and sharing thoughts on parenting…. well, that wasn’t my dad’s style. Not at all. He wasn’t the kind of dad who would share stories of every accomplishment though I can remember moments of pride in the accomplishments of each of us kids.
My dad did have a chance to know that I was working in agriculture and that I hoped to build a career in communications. Since he was a printing pressman, there was something that I would like to think was a silent sense of pride that I was writing the words that would get printed. Of course now, we publish frequently without the skills of printers like my dad. Its dad’s that have taken sharing into their own hands that are “daddy bloggers.”
Media Listing of Daddy Bloggers
So…. what was the blog post that led me to have all this reflection? Well it mentioned my friend Bruce Sallan (Twitter, blog) who started the twitter chat #ADadsPOV to provide a dad’s point of view (join Thursday evenings 6-7 pm Pacific, 8-9 pm central).
In the last 50 years, the shape and dynamic of the “typical” family has shifted dramatically. Long gone are the days of every Dad going to work while Mommy stays home and cares for the children and the demands that go along with it. As represented in shows like “Modern Family” and “Parenthood”, every family is unique and families have been drawing up a blueprint that works best for their circumstances.
No matter who is at home with the kids, it doesn’t leave a lot of time for creativity.
In order to have a lucrative blog, you must constantly come up with new ideas to keep your content fresh and have the discipline to write consistently. It is hard enough to do this without juggling the demands of raising children at the same time, but I’m here to tell you about a few who are able to pull off both successfully.
While Father’s Day is still a month away, we’d like to take the time to honor some of our Top Bloggers who are also Dads. So, we pulled a list of the Top 50 Daddy Blogs from Cision’s media database and ranked them by Klout Score:
- Chris Brogan, Dad-O-Matic
- Adam Cohen, DaDa Rocks
- C.C. Chapman, Digital Dads
- Josh Becker, DadStreet
- Bruce Sallan, A Dad’s Point of View
- Mr. Dad of Divas, Dad of Divas
- Whit Honea, DadCentric
- Neal Pollack, Alternadad
- Mr. Frederick, Mocha Dad
- Dorian Carta, Dad-O-Matic
via Happy (Early) Father’s Day to the Top 50 Daddy Bloggers | Cision Blog.
You can see all 50 on the Cision site. I know some of those guys and they rock, but the process Cision used, led them to really miss some great dads. But no worries, I’ve decided to fix that. 🙂
My Top Daddy Bloggers
I know mommy bloggers get lots of attention, but I think daddy bloggers should too! And with some of the awesome dads I know, it shouldn’t surprise any of you that some of them blog too! So who would I add to the list of the tops? What have they written that you should know about? Here are my top farmer daddy bloggers! Lazy me put them in alphabetical order rather than look up their Klout like Cision did but I took time to show their family presence so maybe it balances out.
- Brent Boersma, From Our Family to Yours — A trip he & his son made to a strawberry farm Brent & his son took
- Glenn Brunkow, Dust on the Dashboard — Appreciating family connections at Mother’s Day prompted Glenn to write this post — he has to be a great dad given that he appreciates moms so much!
- Jeff Fowle, Common Sense Agriculture — Spring is the time for new animals on farms and Jeff did a great job talking through how his son Kyle is learning the life & death lessons at a young age.
- Will Gilmer, The Dairyman’s Blog — Will talks about a bunch of things happening on the farm as well as the all important tee ball season.
- Darin Grimm, Darin’s Ramblings — What a difference an iPad makes in Darin’s household!
- Shaun Haney, Real Agriculture — Shaun did a vlog post on family farm businesses and how to plan for the future
- Doug Martin, Martin Family Farms — Doug frequently posts a short bit of text with a photo or two, but looking at this post, you can see what a great family experience his farm is.
- Ray Prock, Ray-Lin Dairy — Dairy farming gives Ray a daily chance to grow a farmer just like he grew into one.
- Nate Taylor, All Things Agriculture — Nate had a great play day with all the snow the Chicago area got earlier this year.
- Ryan Weeks, Days of the Weeks — The new beginning with baby girl Delaney motivated Ryan to write a heartfelt post.
- Chuck Zimmerman, AgWired — Chuck has had his daughter Carly work with him and she’s had great opportunities to be in the thick of things at the Country Music Awards.

Great list! Looks like I need to do a better job of keeping up with the daddy bloggers. I’m going to leave a link for my favorite non-farming daddy blogger in Kansas, Beau. You’ll have to check him out! http://www.somethingedible.com
