Checking out Kiwis on the Plant & a Kiwi Shrimp Recipe

This week I came across a yummy looking recipe that uses kiwi — its Shrimp with Kiwi Lime Relish from A Mom Knows Best. Laura points out before starting the recipe that “It’s Fall and germs are lurking around us in abundance.  You’ve heard of vitamin C as an immunity booster, and many experts say the best way to get it is  directly from the source (our foods).  What better way to grab some extra C than with a kiwi? This recipe is not only super easy to make but also delicious!” But from my recent travels, I have to add kiwis are in season RIGHT NOW!

I know this because my good friend Ray Prock mentioned that the trees just down the road were kiwis so I had to check them out as I headed back to the hotel to clean up for dinner. I think a lot of us have seen apple, plum or peach trees and grape vines but what about kiwis? I have to admit I hadn’t seen any until Ray pointed me to some in the San Joaquin Valley. Well, I may have seen them, but I didn’t know about it if I had! In fact, I drove right past these on the way to Ray’s farm. It was in the SJV so I couldn’t possibly think too much about all the trees as there are just too many to think about!

Now I know, kiwi trees are actually vines fairly small I guess and the farm had a system of trellises or something to help support the plants and make picking the fruit easier (here’s an interesting post on gardeners using trellis for small apple trees).

Once I got close, there was no mistaken the kiwi were ripe!

Since kiwis are in season, maybe we should all give the Shrimp with Kiwi Lime Relish recipe a try!
