Poll on Favorite Pizza Toppings

Having lived in New York a few years and traveled to Italy a few times, I like to think of myself as a bit of a pizza connoisseur. Okay, that may be stretching it a tiny bit. But I do love pizza. I love thick crust and thin crust. I love marinara or white. Vegetarian or meat lovers. Given last week’s poll and the overhelmingly omnivore/carnivore voting, I’m not sure I’ll get too many vegetarian votes, but I love a wide range!

Some of my favorites are:

  • the around the world sausage are Memphis’ Broadway Pizza House (in the photo and just eaten with family/dear friends — this summer we had a massive crowd there)
  • the pizza margherita in Rome, Italy (thanks Edo for the directions & recommendation – it comes to mind frequently)
  • four cheese at Broadway Pizza in White Plains, NY from my pizza guy Mike who made me untold numbers of pizzas during my four years there
  • the moon pie and sun pie from Lou’s Pie in the Sky, Memphis, TN Cooper-Young — two incredible vegetarian pies that are frequently delivered with a great smile from Lou himself

Some of the farmers who help bring pizza to my plate are:

  • David Brand and family at Brand Dairy Farm who help produce the cheesy goodness You can find him through Twitter & Facebook.
  • Tom Tibbits and his family grow wheat for the crust (thick, thin or in the middle).  Tom has a great blog and is on Twitter.
  • Chris Chinn’s family has a pork farm in Missouri. She’s got a great YouTube video touring that farm and stays in touch through Twitter.
  • Want to double the cheese? Check out Ashley Messing’s blog Dairy Innovation and catch her on Twitter too! She farms with her parents & siblings.

I am a pizza gal and that’s what brings us to this week’s poll!  And photos from some of my pizza spots follow too!

I do prefer my pepperoni to be ground instead of in slices. We have this great chain in Indiana called Pizza King and an even greater chain that started in Lafayette called Arni’s. People always come home and want to “Meet you at Arni’s.” (That’s their slogan, and it works!)

You know I hadn’t thought about that but one of the places I used to get great pizza from had small diced pepperoni — mixed in so well with the sauce & all!

We always order two-one to eat that night, usually hamburger and jalepeno and one for the next morning (cold breakfast pizza YUM!) which is always Canadian Bacon and pineapple. We were so excited when the Pizza place in town expanded their delivery area and included us. Our regular guy knows the dogs don’t bite and if he knocks on the door we are rarely inside so he just brings it around back where we are usually finishing up our evening chores.

We have a couple of Italian Restaurants in our area that ppl flock too for their pizza. I love their pizza too. But, I’ve rarely met a pizza I don’t like. My husband doesn’t like these pizza places at all. He does like thin crust but not like cracker dry. He doesn’t like thick crust at all. HE LIKES CASEY’S “LIGHT ON THE SAUCE, SAUSAGE AND MUSHROOM” How exciting, not! :-} 2 of my boy are pepperoni only, again… kinda boring! But, at least they’ll eat it from any where and not complain. It’s 9 a.m. in the morning and just from this post… I think I need pizza NOW!

Now I am forced to make a town run to get some pizza! My children thank you. 🙂

I like Godfather’s Humble Pie (sausage, onion and green pepper) on their thick crust, but the family favorite is a canadian bacon or ham pzza with pineapple on one side for my wife and kraut on the other side for me.

    OKAY.
I’m from Chicagoland. That being said, I feel like I’m blessed in the world of pizza.

We are the home of Aurelio’s, Gino’s East, Giordano’s, Uno’s/Duo’s, Monical’s…yeah, be jealous.

Anyways, it’s valuable to note that different types of pizza might as well be different foods, in a few ways. Monical’s iconic cracker-thin crust can hardly be compared to Uno’s Chicago-style pan pizza. Different textures, flavors, approaches. I can’t pick a single favorite style of pizza (although Monical’s is “home” to me) because, where I’m from, we have so many styles to pick from!

So, here’s my official Chicagoland guide for pizza styles. Best styles to get at specific places:

    Handtossed = Aurelio’s
    Thin Crust = Monical’s
    Chicago Style = Uno’s/Duo’s, Giordano’s
Thick Crust (Bread style crust, sauce-under cheese, NOT Chicago Style) = Monical’s, Aurelio’s

    I want pizza now.
