One clear sign of spring is the start of baseball’s spring training, but opening day is a critical milestone! This year two big opening days came at the same time — Major League Baseball and one of the seasonal farmers markets in my part of the world. And what’s really cool, is I was able to enjoy both! After shopping at the farmers market, we went into the bar to watch part of the game and have a great meal.
See in the St Louis area, there are lots of farmers markets. the one outside of Schlafly’s Bottleworks in Maplewood is a local farmers market is in a really neat location. I went once last summer before I moved to St Louis and really like that It is a local market. The local focus keeps it smaller (which helps in such an urban environment) and lets you connect with people who actually work with the products rather than serve simply as a distributor. But I have to admit that meant some really limited choices this time of year.

There were still whole grains from the fall harvest. I got a few things… A rosemary olive ciabatta, some granola and a goat cheese foccacia.

There were people selling herbs, green wheat, greens like kale, and onions and garlic.

We were so looking forward to our FM opener this past weekend, and just as we were loading into the car, the call came in that we had a fire in our hay barn! Major bummer… we’re anxiously awaiting “our” FM opener!
