Growing up down south & working on mostly cropping farms, the beauty of big red wooden barns in other parts of the country always means taking a photo or two. Here are some I saw while riding along with Ashley Messing last week.

I read an article a number of years ago about how different styles and different colors tended to be popular with specific groups of immigrants. If I remember right the hip roofed white barns generally were English settlers. the red barns with an overhang (used to hitch, unhitch animals, etc) were German settlers and the smaller, more interesting shapes tended to be Dutch settlerrs. In Ohio anyway.

I love barns like that. Unfortunately, our self-built barn looks nothing like that. Except that it is red. 🙂

Now Elizabeth…. surely I would have stopped by if I were on your road! Frankenmuth, Saginaw, etc are a bit further away than me taking that wrong of a turn!
