Midwest Roadtrip: The American Gothic Home

Recently, on my drive back to St. Louis from Des Moines, I had thought I’d stop along the way and take some photos of tractors rolling etc. While I saw lots of machines on the run tilling the earth or planting a new crop, there was something that made me enjoy more driving than photographing tractors (believe me that is rare). That was until I saw the sign for Eldon, Iowa, home of the American Gothic house…. you know, the home featured in Grant Wood’s iconic painting American Gothic of an older farming couple, standing in front of their home, with him holding a pitchfork. And in a fortuitous turn of events, I needed to gas up. So I turned off the main road and went on my way to see a home that I had seen time and time again.
