Tweet transcript from the Pollan Panel Discussion 10-15-09 (#pp1009)

Today, Cal Poly hosted a panel discussion on agriculture.  Some of our tweeps were in the audience — @dairy dino and @ilovefarmers – and quite a few were watching through the live stream on the net.  It was really something to see and listen to and the tweet flow was steady.  I wanted to revisit some of the points and thought others may as well.  It’s a long transcript and I considered editing out the RTs, but I thought it would illustrate the interest in the topic and presentation.  I had one of our tweeps send a note earlier saying the tweets may have been better than being there cause she had so many people’s views at hand.  Since I was going to the trouble anyway, I figured I might as well post here.

Many of the major media have written stories about some controversy that turned this from a speech by Michael Pollan to a panel discussion (here’s a link to the pre-panel article in the LATimes and the student newspaper recap).  I won’t go into that but do you encourage to read them as it shows some of the background unless you are all up-to-speed.  But I do feel I should say I absolutely support academic freedom and the pursuit of knowledge in the US is a critical part of our culture.  I also know that there is a responsibility that goes with education and that mainstream agriculture has a responsibility to push for a seat at the table.  The panel was enlightening for me and I feel I learned more from the sharing of ideas than I could have by a single speaker.   I learned something from each of the folks on the panel and think that if I had let the stereotypes alone guide my listening I would have missed a lot.

You’ll need to start at the bottom cause I wasn’t smart enough to figure out how to flip the conversation around.  I started with an on-site tweet… hope someone finds this interesting.
