Spring has been incredible. It came early and the temps are almost making me wonder if it’s already summer! Since I moved this fall and last year was so dry, there wasn’t too much for me to look at yard-wise as I bought the house. I’m enjoying all new surroundings and have had several surprises comes up in the yard and the raised bed I inherited as well as some things I expected! I have some things I don’t know what they are too so any tips from others are welcome!

Thank you! I plan to!
Love all the pics. Just beautiful. Unfortunately, I won’t be of much help when it comes to recognizing flowers/plants… My thimb is more black than green!!! 🙂
I already asked one of the girls I work with to take a gander…. its one of the benefits to working with a bunch of people who love plants so much.
Absolutely beautiful. I love dogwood trees. I’m a California girl (no dogwood trees there, that I know of) and I remember the first time I saw a dogwood tree. It was on a spring day just outside of Memphis.
Thanks Amy! Since Memphis was home for a major chunk of my life, its good to have these in St. Louis! My grandmom loved them so they make me smile bigtime!
Janice, one of my co-workers is a Master Gardner so I copied your “unknown plants” and emailed him the photos. Here is what his investigation found…(although I’m pretty sure he knew these off the top of his head!)
Plant 1 is a groundcover called ajuga (or bugleweed).
Plant 2 appears to be a hellebore (or Lenten rose). Can’t tell how big it is from the tiny picture, if it’s taller than 10 inches or so, it’s something else.
Plant 3 is a honeysuckle
Plant 4 is a cotinus (or smoke bush)
These are all nice plants; worth keeping.
Thanks so much for the input! YOU ROCK! I thought 3 was a honeysuckle but in Memphis they are more vine like than trees… I’m going to have to look at this again!
Beautiful photos, Janice. I especially like the pink dogwood blossoms. Thanks for visiting my photo.
Thanks Heather for stopping by! I love the pink dogwoods too! They catch the light so well all day long!
JZ is gorgeous!
And the flowers aren’t bad either!
Thanks! He’s a beauty for sure. Picked him up at the Nashville Farmers market…. Glad I have a convertible cause I had to put the top down to get him in the car…. the hotel’s valet LOVE THAT! 🙂
What a wonderful yard of surprises to discover! You must be in a warmer climate than I. (WI) and I am no authority at all in plants, I just enjoy them :o) I do agree tho with Laurie L about #1 bugleweed. I have that in my yard tho a different species. the leaves have a purple hue & it flowers early in the season & is a great ground cover. I am looking for seeds so I can fill in some grass-less areas on my wild & crazy hilly acre. thanks for stopping by & linking up. It is great meeting new bloggers esp with some of the same interests. Hope to see you again.
Your pictures & collages posts sure put me to shame ( I blog for fun & mental exercise!), just beautiful!
My blog is just me talking about my passions too…. I just love photography! 🙂
Those Dogwoods are my favorite!
Thanks Meghan!
